Activities in Portimão
There are lots of activities you can do in and around the area of Portimão.
Outdoor Activities
Portimão offers three first class golf resorts - Penina Golf Course, Alto Golf Course and Morgado do Regengo as well as there’s a huge choice of additional courses on Portimao’s periphery. There is property available on all of these courses for rent or sale in the style of villas, town houses and apartments.
In the Portimão area is Armação de Pera with a small 18th Century fortress and a popular location for tourists with its long sandy beach where watersports such as sailing, surfing, water-skiing and scuba diving are catered for. As well as the sports you can watch here, cultural shows, can be seen in Portimão. Some examples are the Boardercross Championships, kitesurf or windsurf competitions, or festivals of live jazz and Mediterranean music.
Day trips
Santa Bernarda is a twin-masted pirate ship that offers sailing and cave expeditions. It departs from the hrabour. Boats are also available on the marina for game fishing, dolphin sighting and scenic upriver trips.
The former fishing hamlet of Ferragudo lies 5km east of Portimão. It offers a fine beach, which is also the site of the restored 16th century Castelo de Sao Joao (St. John’s Castle). Now privately owned, the castle was originally built to defend Portimao. There are many laid-back restaurants and bars near the beach. Watersports equipment is also available to rent.
