Information on Polis
The harsh battle for Cyprus between the successors of Alexander the Great, Antigonus and Ptolemy led Marion to destruction. Ptolemy, who finally prevailed, laid waste the city who’s King had taken the side of Antigonus, and transferred its inhabitants to Paphos. Later, another member of the Ptolemy dynasty, Philadelphus, founded a new city on the ruins of Marion, and gave it the name of his wife, Arsinoe.
The city, under its new name, prospered during the Hellenistic and Roman Ages. In early Christian times it was also an episcopate. For some years after that, there was no mention of the city until the late Middle Ages when reference was made to Chrysochou and later, Polis Chrysochou. Polis is located North-West of the region of Pafos at a 30 minute distance from the town of Pafos, 45 minutes from Pafos airport and less than 2 hours away from Larnaca airport. Polis is the ideal area for holiday or relocation, especially for the select few who appreciate authenticity and seek rest and tranquility in a pleasant and friendly environment, which blends mountains, sea and plain with a wonderful healthy climate, a mild winter, a particularly warm, clear sea and sandy beaches.
As far as accommodation is concerned, the area of Polis provides all kinds of living or renting accommodation in all categories from luxurious apartments, holiday villages, villas with private swimming pools to simple family accommodation units. Similarly, the area offers all the amenities required for a pleasant trip; a tourist office, banks, a hospital, pharmacies, ample shops, restaurants, taverns, bars, cafes and a picturesque pedestrian's area in the traditional heart of Polis, a local meeting point throughout the year from early hours till late at night.
The climate in Polis is warm and pleasant for most of the year although in July and August the temperature can reach 35 or 36C. The most popular months to visit are May, June, September and October when the temperature is between 25C and 30C and the humidity low. The Mediterranean Ocean is warm and clear and ideal for swimming or water sports and the cooler mountains are close by.
The beach in Polis is located a short distance from the village square. There is a woodland shaded area which is used as a campsite particularly during Cypriot public holidays. This beach boasts a mixture of coarse sand and shingle with stones and pebbles in the water. There is a small on site tavern with toilet facilities. This is generally a quieter beach.
Polis is served by the picturesque fishing port of Latsi -a pole of attraction all year round and reputed for its fantastic fish taverns, its sea-sport facilities and boat rides up to the Akamas Peninsula.
