Argaka

Information on Argaka

Argaka is a beautiful and somewhat unspoilt Cypriot Village sandwiched between the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and a spectacular mountain range filled with pine trees. Argaka is a village of the Pathos district, located in the coastal plains of Chrysochous at the mid-east section of Chrysochous’s Bay. It has a distance of about 8 km from Polis (Chrysochous), while it stands at an altitude of about 90 meters above sea level.

Argaka is a very privileged village. It is a small beautiful community of the area of Polis Chrysochous. It lies at the very beginning of Paphos Forest and only meters away from the beach. Argaka enjoys both sea and mountain views, and an excellent climate of a mild winter, and a particularly warm summer. With a population of 1,000 or so, Argaka has two churches, Ayia Varvara being the oldest. It has coffee shops and a few tavern’s that serve excellent, locally grown food.

The settlement of Argaka has two parts. There is Pano Argaka (Upper) and Kato Argaka (Lower). Upper Argaka represents the old settlement while Lower Argaka, which followed the Polis to Pomos to Nicosia road, is the new, linear to type settlement. Set somewhat lower on the slopes above Chrysochous Bay and closer to the Polis to Pomos road, Kato Argaka is a more contemporary settlement, which has recently come to the notice of prospective homebuyers looking for properties well off the beaten track. The houses of the old settlement are mostly traditional, made with hewed limestone or with igneous pebbles. Because of the stream that crosses it (known as the River of Argaka), of the slope upon which it is built, and of the road through which it connects with the new settlement by the sea, the settlement of Argaka can be characterized as a relatively sparsely structured one.

While Lower Argaka stands next to the sea, Upper Argaka stands upon the slope with an excellent view towards the sea. Consisting mainly of traditional limestone dwellings and with something of a meandering layout, Pano Argaka is the older of the two communities. Here, the traditional spirit of Cyprus is still very much in evidence and the local tavern provides a focal point for the village’s residents to gather, exchange news and pass the time of day. Both parts of the village provide outstanding views, not only of the Mediterranean Sea, but also of the mountains further inland but, whilst Argaka is covered by urban planning regulations, the steadily growing stream of new property developments seen in some other parts of Cyprus, has so far remained absent from this beautifully scenic village.
