What to see and do in Alvor
Portugal has a history combined of many cultures and religions. Alvor ’s history is visable in every corner of the town.
The Parish Church offers as a stunning example of the Manueline era of architecture and was originally built in the 16th century; however, had to be rebuilt after the tremendous 1755 earthquake.
The Igreja Matriz ’s arches, pillars and doors have been carved into the shapes of plants and fishing ropes and provide as another example of the Manueline style from the 16th century.
The Marabout Chapels of Sao Joao and Sao Pedro (St. John and St. Peter), offer as a contrast to the Manueline architecture with their cubic structures and spherical cupolas and act to demonstrate the Moorish architectural influence.
The harbour is full of colorful fishing boats and is surrounded by several good fish restaurants. Apartments and villa’s cant be rented or bought overlooking this beautiful harbour.
The Ria Alvor can be explored by boat. The vast estuary is the chosen nesting place of dozens of species of migratory birds if you enjoy bird watching. The marshes also offer as a nesting ground and home to an array of animal life.
