Alvor is an ancient port town whose architecture remains heavily influenced, more so than other areas along the Algrave, by its Arabic history.
Alvor is best known for its querky maze of streets, lanes and alleys that are rife with bars and restaurants. The main street for restaurants and bars is Rua Dr Frederico Romas Mendes. This street leads to a riverside square with its own fish market and restaurants. The older fishing village remains intact and although this area is now a very popular holiday destination, development has been kept to a minimum due to the narrow streets.
